The keynote of a convention often is an indicator of things to come, and our DevCon keynote delivered in spades with new product demos, program announcements, a thundering Skype video, and more numbers than you can shake your badge at.

After starting with a brief introduction and welcome from Max Mancini, the Senior Director of Platform & Disuptive Innovation at eBay, our President of eBay Marketplaces, John Donahoe, was invited on stage to run the numbers. He seemed very pleased that our numbers were looking up, up, up including such impressive facts including 9.2 billion API calls and 14.28 billion $USD gross merchandive volume for Q1 of 2007. He stressed that eBay was building a portfolio of businesses that were all tied together by "connecting people through commerce" and providing a "rich set of ecosystems and virbrant communities" that developers could cater to. A full list of new funcitonality for 2007 is in Delyn's previous post about key product announcements from DevCon.

Overall, John's message was that developers are very important to eBay Inc, we are rapidly developing the platform, and there is rich economic activity around all our properties.

After John's overview, Kevin Lynch delivered the first section of the keynote with an introduction to Adobe's AIR platform which allows the development of rich web user experiences in a cross-platform installable application. San Dimas is eBay's Apollo application and Kevin invited Alan Lewis up to give a demo.

Intent on providing an extended experience off the eBay core site, San Dimas includes much of the standard eBay functionality while also pulling off a new new tricks such as "history" and seamless desktop alerts with the ability to bid from the alert window. All DevCon attendees can sign up for a free, priority beta test at http://projectsandimas.com

The last two portions of the keynote were from the PayPal and Skype folks with more impressive numbers and stats about their program. Clearly the message here was that our developer programs are doing well and driving massive value for both the developers and the users.

Stay tuned for session-by-session blogging from the conference!
