Developer Impact: Paperless payments

We also announced today that, beginning in late October, all items listed on eBay.com must be paid for using one of the following approved payment options:

  • Direct credit or debit card payment via a merchant credit card account
  • PayPal
  • ProPay
  • Payment on pick-up

Paper payment methods such as checks and money orders will no longer be accepted on eBay.com.

This new payment policy will not apply to vehicles in the eBay Motors category, capital equipment  in  the Business & Industrial category, Mature Audiences, or Real Estate.

If your AddItem call includes paper payment methods, those payment methods will be removed from the listing. If your AddItem call only specifies paper payment methods, the listing will fail. This includes 30-Day GTC listings when they cycle.

Sellers will have a grace period until January 2009 to update their item description to remove paper payment options.

Recommendation: Be sure to remove non-approved payment options from all listings and templates. If not done so already, integrate the approved payment methods as above as options for your sellers in your tools.
